Calcutta was the capital of the British Raj till the beginning of 20th century and has many jewels in it's crown. Calcutta has some places of sheer magic, but unlike Delhi, Calcutta isn't an ancient city with relics from the past. It has the Howrah bridge which is the busiest bridge in the world with about 80,000 vehicles and countless pedestrians crossing it everyday.

Calcutta, has a big airport and is very well connected to all parts of the country. Calcutta is also a good place to go to other parts of Asia. Bus services from Calcutta re not as good an alternative as they are from other parts of India. It's generally better to travel from Calcutta by train. Calcutta has two major stations, both of them very busy. At the airport, there is a rail reservation desk, where they have a air travellers quota.

Darjeeling, surrounded by green tea plantations is one of the most popular hill stations in the country. It is a fascinating place where you can enjoy a view of the breath taking Kanchenjunga, see Buddhist Monasteries, visit a tea plantation or go trekking near the high altitude spots. It has the unique attraction of the famous Toy Train.

The nearest airport is 90 Kms away at Bagdogra, down on the plains near Siliguri. There are many buses, jeeps, cars to Calcutta, Kathmandu and other points further afield. The journey to Darjeeling from Siliguri on the famous miniature railway is a superb experience which should not be missed.
